Timaru: Japanese pottery exhibition

The Aigantighe Art Gallery in Timaru is currently hosting an international touring exhibition of contemporary Japanese ceramics, along with Auckland and Wellington, as one of three New Zealand venues. The exhibition opened on July 1, and will close August 7. Co-hosted by the Japan Foundation, Embassy of Japan and Consular Office of Japan, the exhibition introduces the works of 35 artists active in seven major traditional kiln sites across Japan. Art Gallery Manager Cara Fitzgerald noted, “We are honoured to be working with our co-hosts to bring an exhibition of this calibre to Timaru. With a focus on the theme of vessels, this selection aims to strengthen an understanding of the past, present and future of Japanese Pottery. South Canterbury is a fitting venue to host this exhibition as it has long been associated with both the ceramic arts and with ceramic manufacturing.”
